3 Beginner-Friendly DIY Projects to Try with Shweshwe

If you’re looking for a fun, meaningful way to get creative, traditional Shweshwe fabric is a great place to start. Known for its bold prints, crisp feel, and distinctive smell, Shweshwe is more than just a textile — it’s a part of South Africa’s heritage. Still made using time-honoured methods, Da Gama Textiles is proud to be the home of the original Shweshwe.

Whether you’re new to sewing or just love a good weekend project, here are three beginner-friendly DIY ideas to get you started.

  1. DIY Shweshwe Scrunchie
Perfect for: Upcycling leftover fabric and adding colour to your look.

    Materials Needed:
  • Shweshwe fabric (10cm x 45cm)
  • 20cm of elastic (0.5cm width)
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Safety pin

    Follow these steps:
  1. Cut the fabric into a 10cm x 45cm strip.
  2. Fold it in half lengthwise, with right sides facing each other, and sew along the long edge to create a fabric tube.
  3. Turn the fabric tube inside out.
  4. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the fabric tube.
  5. Tie or sew the elastic ends together securely.
  6. Tuck one fabric end into the other and sew it closed by hand or machine.
  7. Fluff the scrunchie — and you’re done!

  1. DIY Shweshwe Pillowcase (Envelope Style – No Zipper)

Perfect for: Brightening up your home with a handmade touch.

    Materials Needed:
  • Shweshwe fabric (50cm x 110cm for a standard pillow)
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Pins or clips

    Follow these steps:
  1. Cut one large piece of Shweshwe fabric (50cm x 110cm).
  2. Hem both short edges: fold each edge over twice (1cm each time) and sew to secure.
  3. Lay the fabric flat with the pattern side up. Fold the two short ends inward so they overlap in the middle — this creates the envelope-style opening.
  4. Pin along the top and bottom long edges and sew them closed.
  5. Turn the pillowcase inside out and insert your pillow.

  1. DIY Shweshwe Tote Bag

Perfect for: Shopping trips, books, or everyday carry.

    Materials Needed:
  • Shweshwe fabric:
  • 2 pieces (45cm x 40cm) for the body
  • 2 strips (60cm x 8cm) for the straps
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Iron

    Follow these steps:
  1. Cut two fabric pieces (45cm x 40cm each) for the bag body.
  2. Place the two pieces right sides together and sew along the sides and bottom — leave the top open.
  3. Fold down the top edge of the bag by 2cm, iron flat, and sew a neat hem.
  4. For the straps, fold each 60cm x 8cm strip in half lengthwise, sew along the edge, and turn the tubes inside out.
  5. Iron the straps flat and pin them to the top edge of the bag. Sew them in place securely.
  6. Turn the tote right-side out — and it’s ready to use.
